Planet BS

There's a lot of bullshit out there. So I want to help you navigate through the mire in a post I call Planet BS.

I got a short one for you today. You here all the time about big auto firms cutting 10,000 jobs. Or the airliners laying off 15,000.

Sounds pretty bad doesn't it. That's until you study a little bit about human resources and realize that that many people didn't lose their jobs.

In HR terms, when a job is cut that means the position is eliminated. For example, let's say GM had in their minds to hire 5,000 people to fill a call center and they only ended up hiring 2,500. If 2,500 seemed to be enough they would cut 2,500 jobs.

We would here in the paper that 2,500 jobs were cut. But no one lost their job. They just aren't going to hire any more people.

Now there are situations where people are actually losing their jobs, but the numbers you see are always mixed together.

As usual the news media isn't lying, they're just being sneaky bastards to get people all riled up. But you're too smart for that. Good day.
